How To Talk To Your Kids About Hearing Loss

How To Talk To Your Kids About Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is one of the most common health issues that people across the world will face during their lifetime. In America specifically, more than twelve-thousand babies are born each year with varying degrees of hearing loss. With this in mind, it is important to talk to your kids about hearing loss for many reasons; one being that they may come across another child who is struggling with hearing loss.

School children sometimes do not understand the perils of their peers – whether it be a learning disability or something as simple as their peer wearing a pair of hearing aids. In talking to our children about hearing loss while they’re young, we are offering a sense of compassion should they ever become friends with another child who wears hearing aids.

Teach your kids to follow the general rules of thumb:

Be Positive

Be Kind

Be Open-minded

Be Compassionate

Every human on earth is born a clean slate – if we instill the aforementioned things into our children at a young age, they will understand the importance of accepting those who may be different than they are!

As always, if you think your child may be experiencing some of the signs of hearing loss such as:

• Needing to listen to television or music louder than most

• Sitting closer to the television while watching in order to hear more clearly

• Having to repeat things several times before they comprehend

• Struggling to pay attention in class and/or difficulty hearing their teacher
