Could Healthy Diet Reduce Hearing Loss Risk in Women?
Could a healthy diet lower the risk of hearing loss in women? Well, according to a new study from Brigham and Women's Hospital - a Harvard College affiliate - a healthy diet could reduce the risk of hearing loss in women by 30 percent.
In the study, the eating habits of nearly 71,000 nurses over a period of 22 years were analyzed
The study, which was conducted over a period of 22 years, looked at the eating habits of nearly 71,000 nurses. Epidemiologist at BWH, Dr. Sharon Curhan says her team found that it was not just one specific diet throughout the years that made a difference, rather a pattern of overall healthy eating. "Vegetables and fruits, nuts and legumes, and whole grains and healthy fats - in particular olive oil and moderate alcohol intake," she said. She also added that balance is important, and a healthy diet should minimize the intake of red meat, processed meat, refined sugar, and grains and fruit juices.
The results of this study were published in the Journal of Nutrition on May 11, 2018 and show that the study observed that the women who participated in a healthy diet had a lower risk of acquired hearing loss. Dr. Curhan says, "Eating well contributes to overall good health, and may also be helpful in reducing the risk of hearing loss."
